Dark Sector

Sun Aug 2, 2009, 9:53 AM
This is a game that is basically Resident Evil + Krull. It's an over the shoulder 3rd person action game where you don't jump, just run around and can leap over objects that are programmed to be interacted with so. You have guns, but you're infected with something nasty and because of it almost all the weapons in the game have infection detectors and will only work for about 10 seconds or so in your hands before they are shorted out. But the infection also gives you the Glaive, which is the krull element. It's a nasty bladed frisbee that you can decapitate most enemies in one hit with. You can even get powers later on that give you control of it while it's in flight. After you get that power you hardly ever pick up anything unless it's a rocket launcher. There are a few weapons that don't happen to have the detector on it, like this huge cannon/machine gun combo that you sort of rip off an armored suit.

The storyline is actually rather trite. You're thrown into a situation you're not aware of quite yet, come to figure some things out just in time to save the world. You're infected and want to find out why and for what reason. There are also few bosses in the game. It has few puzzles to accomplish and is mostly fighting. And the way that the game introduces new techniques to you could do with some more guidance. As well, one of the most common enemies in the game is introduced to you in a wave of about 5 and they'll pretty much kill you about 2-3 times before you realize they're not actually that hard. Though it's length is good enough and the levels are varied enough that it doesn't feel like all you're doing is fighting (which you all you really are doing is that). It introduced a new element just in time for the previous one to get boring. However, its length does make the idea of replaying it a bit . . . daunting. Not "let's play Oblivion again" daunting, when you finish Dark Sector you realize that it's not really worth it.

The graphics are pretty good and the AI is varied in its tactics. The humans will seek cover and provide suppressive fire for each other, though that doesn't actually do much in the end against a glaive that can arc from over a wall and decapitate 5 guys in a hole (like I said, once you can control that thing in the air you won't do anything else).

It's an alright game. I spent $19 for it and felt that I could have waited will it was 15 or even 10. It was good enough for 4-5 days of gaming. If the game had puzzles and a better story line, then I'd have paid 29 for it, but the new twist on the genre made it interesting enough for someone like me to pick up. I'm just that kind of guy that likes seeing new thing, and it kept feeding me something new to eat up, and I ate it up, and I liked it enough.

It has a multiplayer but it's only LAN, a dumb idea. Maybe it was thrown in last minute, but then don't advertise something you just threw in at the last minute. I haven't played it as no one else I know at LANs actually owns this game.
